What does it mean to run an eco-friendly retail business?
Dana JonesWhen we first opened Ebb & Flow Boutique in June 2025, we made eco-sustainability one of our core values. While we believe we have done a good job of staying true to our original intent, we've never really explained what that means and how it guides our choices as a retailer. So let's dive into what we actually do as a lifestyle retail store to live that value.
Source Locally
Wherever we can, we source our inventory as close to our retail store in Oregon as we can. Buying from local makers and artists not only means that more of our expenditure stays in our local community, it also means that products don't have to travel as far. Every mile that a product journeys from its source to the point where you buy it adds cost -- both to the consumer and to the planet. Trucks, trains, cars, and other delivery vehicles all burn fossil fuels and contribute to the carbon footprint of consumerism.
Many of the makers we carry are based right here in Eugene, Oregon. Our product search radiates out from there to the rest of Oregon and the Pacific Northwest, then on to the US, and then in rare cases to other countries. We aren't purists when it comes to inventory sourcing, but source location is a top-tier consideration for us when we buy. And you can see for yourself if you check out all the products we have from Oregon-based makers!
Sustainable Materials
Renewable product materials are essential to running a sustainable brand. There are certain natural sources -- wood, bamboo, hemp, recycled plastics -- that have a lower carbon footprint. In many cases this is because they grow more quickly and more cheaply. In other cases it's because they are a "waste" product from other production source and using them productively keeps them out of the landfill.

We prioritize stocking products with a low carbon footprint where we can. We offer no plastic cutting boards, for example -- only those made from renewable woods and bamboo. As another example, we carry a wide range of products made from bamboo -- e.g. soap dishes, utensils, beauty products, and more. Bamboo grows quickly and abundantly in lots of climates, is durable, and will compost completely when its usefulness is at an end.
Limit Packaging
Product packaging -- especially plastics -- contribute significantly to the burden on our planet. As a buying culture we have become accustomed to having every item we buy pre-packaged in plastic bags, wrappers, shell cases, etc. under the illusion that this makes them more hygienic. And for some products, this kind of packaging is justified (think: the medical community).
But in so many instances, it's not only unwarranted, it can add cost, waste, and hassle. So wherever we can, we source products that lack this extra packaging. We prefer the challenge of finding creative ways to present our product selection to you the consumer and keep more packaging out of the landfill.
Upcycle, Recycle, Reclaim

Part of the charm of our store is that many of our store fixtures (the things we used to display our inventory) are either recycled or upcycled. We have several kitchen hutches, for example, that have become great showcases for everything from jams and jellies to purses and pottery. We have end tables, stools, display racks, and so much more that came from thrift stores, garage sales, and estate sales. According to the EPA, over 37 million tons of durable goods end up in landfills every year. Furnishings accounts for over 10 million tons alone. By reusing existing furniture and fixtures we not only save money and add personality, we also get to keep these items from finding their way into the landfill.

We're also intentional when it comes to our product packaging for shipping online sales, creating gift baskets, and the like. We save and reuse packing materials from the vendors we use rather than buying these items ourselves. We've been open over nine months as of the writing of this post, and have yet to purchase a single roll of bubble wrap for example! We use compostable paper basket filler, paper shopping bags, and recycled tissue paper. Even our accent wall ledge is made from reclaimed fencing!
Buy From Women and Minorities
One of the lesser-known ways to promote sustainability is to buy from businesses that also prioritize that. Anyone can make business decisions that are eco-conscious, but the truth is that women-owned businesses are more likely to reinvest their business profits into families and local economies, as well as "prioritize inclusivity and sustainability through redefining corporate responsibility and supporting causes like environmental protection".

Groups that have been traditionally marginalized in business ownership and other financial opportunities learn to be creative, frugal, and innovative to counteract the systemic disadvantages they face. They often adopt business practices that are more efficient of time and resources, which usually makes them more ecologically sound and less wasteful as a result.
For these reasons, we actively seek out businesses that are owned by women, non-binary folks, and/or members of other marginalized groups. In addition to aligning with our moral point of view around equity of opportunity, this approach is a big part of why our inventory selection is so unique compared to other lifestyle retail stores.
Summing Up
There are other ways, of course. We are careful with how we use our HVAC system. We donate to organizations that have the same ecological priorities. Our employees often walk to work or take the bus. We hold our staff meetings within walking distance of the store.
No one blog post can fully capture all of the details of such an essential aspect of our business model. Hopefully if you've made it this far in this blog post, you have a pretty good sense of who we are, what matters to us, and how we actually walk the walk of being a responsible, eco-conscious retail store in an age where it gets harder and harder all the time. Shopping with us is a small way in which you can rest assured that your buying decisions are ecologically sound. 🌎💚
