The North Atlantic right whale is one of the most endangered whale species, with fewer than 400 individuals in the western North Atlantic Ocean. In the eastern North Atlantic Ocean, populations are virtually extinct. The right whale is characterized by the lack of a dorsal fin, as well as callosities--hard white buildup of barnacles and cyamids--on its head.
